The Local Area

Our big and beautiful holiday houses are tucked away in a quiet corner of Somerset, surrounded by beautiful countryside. On the doorstep are fields and woodlands and gentle rolling hills, so glorious views, wholesome fresh air and bird song come gratis. This is a lovely place to be, and there’s much to see and do in the local area – footpaths to explore, award-winning family attractions, historic market towns to browse, cosy country pubs, and the beaches of the Jurassic Coast.

Enclosed outside area with artificial grass and children climbing frame

Just across the road from your 5 star group accommodation you can climb over the stile and follow the footpath through the fields to the pretty village of Dowlish Wake with its centuries old stone cottages. Go to the New Inn for a leisurely lunch, or to Perry's Cider for a proper job cream tea and to see how this famous West Country drink is made.

If you need supplies, pop into Ilminster, just a 5 minute drive away, where there are supermarkets and local shops. Have a mooch about, pop into the award-winning Bonners Butchers and the bakers, browse the antiques and curios at No. 57, see the latest art exhibition and makers gallery at Ilminster Arts Centre.

Have a day out with the kids; if the weather’s not too bad, head over to the beaches on the Jurassic Coast. Lyme Regis is a must, with its historic harbour and four beaches; stroll along the seafront, visit Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, play mini golf in the town gardens, go and meet the sealife at Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium. If you want an adventure, go out to sea on a mackerel fishing trip and catch your tea, or take an exhilarating rib ride around the bay.

A little further along the coast is Beer where you can see the underground caverns at Beer Quarry Caves and ride around the gardens on the miniature train at Pecorama. Then go down to Ducky’s Beach Café for crab sandwiches, or stroll over the cliffs on the South West Coast Path to Branscombe where picture postcard thatched cottages line the streets and down by the shore you can stop for refreshments at the Sea Shanty.

You’ll find heaps of places to visit, whatever you like doing. If you like historic houses and glorious gardens, Forde Abbey is only a few miles away, or you can go to Montacute House and wind your way back round Ham Hill Country Park for a picnic. It’s not far to Haynes Motor Museum or Fleet Air Arm Museum; also good for a day trip are The Donkey Sanctuary and Wildwood Devon.

If you’re looking for activities as part of a birthday or anniversary celebration, time your stay to coincide with a match at Somerset County Cricket Club, book clay pigeon shooting or archery with BBland Instruction, or a wingwalk at Dunkeswell Aerodrome. Maybe just go for a pootle about the lanes and wind up at one of the welcoming country pubs in the area; very good are The Cotley Inn, The Five Dials and The Lord Poulett Arms, all within a short drive.

You’ll find plenty more inspiration on our Things To Do pages, so take a look and start planning a fantastic large group holiday in Somerset. Come and be happy, come and make memories to last a lifetime. Book today!
